Consider the Quest a sort of jack-of-all-trades distance board. Uphills, downhills, high speeds and cruising will all be comfortable on this thing. And while the Nexus is equally as much a downhill and freeride board, the Quest truly focuses on distance in particular, highlighting the thinner overall profile for ergonomic, efficient pushing, with larger cutouts that will support a slightly slimmer truck setup. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eThe Quest is a fairly beefy but slim package. It will manage heavy weights up to about 250 pounds (has been tested up to 300 lbs with success, but we usually like recommending the even beefier Nexus over 250), while still providing a light dampening flex for riders down to about 150 pounds. The unidirectional shape of the Quest subconsciously pushes you forward, and its low, long, fairly stiff platform adds stability at speed compared to other Pantheon pushers like the Trip and Pranayama. It is slightly longer than the Nexus overall, but only because of the closed off nose and tail truck mounting area. Otherwise, the Quest has a 1-inch shorter wheelbase, and this actually translates into being able to stand slightly closer to the trucks and to reduce the amount of foot pressure you’ll be putting into the drops, which makes this a less aggressive board. The Nexus is stiffer and wider than the Quest and really should be considered for riders who intend on using the Nexus for sliding, where you’ll be actively using the drops to push the board around and control slides, as opposed to the drops simply just lowering the platform for easy pushing, foot braking, and added stability, like they do here on the Quest. \u003cbr\u003eWhen setting up the Quest, we mostly recommend this board with 150mm RKP trucks and large, slim wheels like the 85mm Seismic Speed Vents. If you want the grippier, wider 85mm Orangatang Caguamas, you’ll have to size up to 165mm. Most riders will opt for the 50-degree setups in both front and back, but if you really want an extra stable setup, put a 43-degree in the rear. This will give comfort at speed, and some riders just generally prefer stability for pushing. The more exposed the fiberglass, the more you’re going to feel it. The biggest reason is that we wanted to create a deck that wouldn’t warp on you, no matter how much you abuse it. There is definitely more value than ever in this board!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003eTHE SHAPE\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 2020 Gaia features a 0.2″ modified crescent drop, hidden within the board’s rails to create super clean lines that both look smooth and fast and feel less intrusive. You will notice obvious places to stand, where your feet are really locked in the pockets, but the concave hardly forces you into them. It’s much more free flowing and surfy than the older models with wheel flares–ideal for freeride and flowy downhill–and it lets you stand close to being right on top of the trucks if that’s your style. The Gaia doesn’t separate the tail from the rest of the deck as much as previous models or other decks with a specific center platform and kicktail, making the tail highly accessible and usable. And this board does have POP.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe taper is as close to our version of “perfect” as our experience has been able to produce. The shape of the deck forces a surfy stance, and with your front foot placement at about 45 degrees and toe in the drop, your heel will drop right into the fattest part of the board at 9.6 inches. The rear foot placement will depend on comfort. The deck is right at 8.5 inches wide at the base of the rear drop, so if you’re freeriding and or predrifting and dropping back to stick your toe in the drop, you will have a combination of rail feel and drop leverage to really push the deck around. This is a sort of specialty deck designed specifically for LDP and general pumping for fun. Pumping is the act of using a turn to accelerate and happens as weight is loaded into a turn, and then you use the resistance created by the force of turning to push against the board and create acceleration. First, let’s be clear that we strongly believe in standing on the trucks when it comes to this type of riding. The front of the Genesis is very wide–about 10 inches exactly at the innermost front bolts, which is likely right about where your heel will fall if you are nose riding. And while many top mount pumpers will find themselves riding with a footstop, the Genesis comes equipped with concave flares right at the front, which fairly drastically tell you where the end of the board is, so that you don’t ride over the front of the deck. This gives a more free feeling to the front of the board, because you have all the foot space you need and ride the absolute front of the board without a footstop cramping you up over the long haul. You will find yourself moving around on this board very comfortably, riding directly on top of the board to sliding back and playing with the flex in your pumps. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe wheel wells on the Genesis are set in from the edge of the board. Some older model pump decks tend to do no wheel wells at all or they will run the wheel well super thin toward the edge of the board. Because pumpers are so focused toward nose riding, riders will sometimes flex the wheel wells and cause wheelbite, or even crack the wheel wells over time along the grain of the board. The Genesis alleviates this flex by cutting the wheel wells in from the edge, so that when your trucks turn in deep, your wheels will tuck into the board and the edge of the wheel will fall into the wheel well without flexing the board out. There is a very mild camber through the length–just enough to provide a little bit of energy load when standing on the deck. Because the deck is nearly flat already, the flex profile does not need to be quite as tuned for the weight of the rider, as riders between 130-200 pounds will flex the board to flat, and any additional energy will go into flexing the board further down and going into the return of the board. It is not an overly bouncy deck, but the fiberglass does provide for solid energy return. This is not an overly complicated deck. It is simply effective and very comfortable throughout the length of the platform. Longer wheelbases provide for more flex and higher speeds, and the Genesis maxes out at 32.75 inches, which is quite long. While it will take a little extra energy to accelerate the deck at the outer wheelbase, higher speeds are reachable and more easily maintained with less effort at the longer wheelbases. Riders will likely find themselves comfortably pushing up to a comfortable speed and then pumping to maintain when the wheelbase is maxed out. In general, you’ll want a truck somewhere between 145mm and 180mm. The slimmer you go, the wider you’ll want your wheels to be, if you want to match the width of your deck. A 150mm truck and a mid-sized offset wheel is a really nice combo on the Hierophant, and you can run the deck symmetrically or asymmetrically and have it feel right. There are low points at the front heel and rear toe to offer comfort in the foot pockets, while there is still significant concave in front drops, especially, and in the center of the board to offer stiffness. The front crescent drops offer tons of board feel while generally staying out of your way, and you can right with the outside of your foot up against the drops, or aggressively ride on the front and rear drops, like Chase, where the ball of your foot falls into the crescent as a substantial wedge point for tons of board control. The board is essentially divided into two foot platforms, with a camber in between to separate the front and rear foot, subtly cupping the feet on both sides. There is a mild rear W concave in the rear foot pocket that drops out of the camber in front of the foot, providing maximum W-height at the low point of the foot pocket, but then disappearing before going into the drop, allowing a comfortable space for the rear foot to cross the board without uncomfortable obstruction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCONSTRUCTION\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e8 ply maple with triaxial fiberglass. We place the glass UNDERNEATH the top and bottom layer of wood for the purpose of comfort for the rider. This deck has a tail, and riders are beating the crap out of it. We don’t want you to get glass in your hands as this board starts to wear; however, we want you to get the benefits of fiberglass in the board, so we cover the outside with maple. Like all Pantheon boards in the current lineup, the entire board is laminated with waterproof resin. While the deck is not entirely waterproof, it is much more weatherproof and warp resistant than many other boards. A ton of thought went into this deck as we were looking for a way to both make an aesthetically appealing board, but combining it with the features that Chase really demands in his skating. Chase also wanted a more usable tail for his pro model board, as he was traveling the world and wanted a board he could truly take anywhere and do anything with. Racing, freeride, or cruising around town, the Chase Hiller Pro model deck can handle it all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch4\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSETUPS\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/h4\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chase Hiller pro combines best with slim 130-140mm trucks and wide wheels OR 150mm trucks and freeride wheels. Splitting it down the middle is a nice compromise, although easily slapping on some 150mm trucks and just calling it a day is totally acceptable. While the front and rear are both flush mounted, we actually angled the front flush mount 3 degrees. This gives the board some directionality, but it also allowed us to do something else that was very important for the board, which was to keep the deck strong while also getting the mounting holes as close into the drops as possible. You’ve never been able to stand into a drop like this, unless you’re dealing with some super thin material, which we just couldn’t afford on this deck, as Chase is an absolute destroyer of boards, and we want you to be able to ride as hard as he does without worrying about causing failure. So, this angling is something to keep in mind. Whatever truck you put up front will be wedged an additional 3 degrees. Directionality certainly isn’t a bad thing, but if you’re looking for symmetry, you’ll have to offset this angle to bring the front back down. And it still offers a subtle flex for riders over 170 lbs so that distance feels comfortable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRiders on the lower end of our weight range may notice a touch of camber underfoot. The camber may not completely flatten out if you’re pushing in the middle of the deck. However, it’s not so much that it is uncomfortable for these types of rides. If you’re a rider that really doesn’t like camber, we would recommend making sure that you’re on the upper end of the weight range. We’ve been making boards since 2014, so why haven’t we come up with a cruiser until 2023?! Well, conceptually, Pantheon boards are boards of specificity, and we like doing things perfectly. It took quite a while to come up with a way to make this board special. We’ve tested several shapes and molds in past years, and if riding a board doesn’t create a unique and exemplary experience, it doesn’t make it into our lineup. That’s where the Fantail Cruiser comes in. What we wanted was beauty, a unique feel, and a shape that doesn’t create limitations where a lot of cruiser decks do.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost cruisers are tiny, and tiny boards can be fun, but they can also be scary. They aren’t particularly great decks to learn on, and great skaters can show them off, but novice skaters often find themselves getting hurt or just not being able to do much beyond cruise slowly on these decks. The Fantail starts off from a more forgiving space already by increasing the wheelbase to 19.2 inches. A larger wheelbase is more stable, and having more space on the board gives riders room to shift their balance without falling over the front or falling off the back end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe micro drops are small enough that you can stand right over the top, but you will feel it enough to always know where you are on the board. Between the curvature of the micro drops, the sweeping rails, and the tail, you never have to look at your feet on this board. Traditional street trucks are a great setup on this deck, but because it has a large wheelbase, we like to set this board up with wedges for general cruising. With this, you get a more active turn, and it essentially rides like a smaller wheelbase board with the benefit of having a large cruiser platform. This makes the board super fun but also confidence inspiring! With traditional kingpin trucks and wedges, expect to be able to ride between 65-70mm wheels without wheelbite. If you drop the wedges, you may need to change bushings to avoid wheelbite with larger wheels.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur other setup of liking is with RKP trucks. The 19.2″ wheelbase is just the right size to level up your turn with an RKP truck on a cruiser deck. Again, smaller wheelbases can get squirrely when you make them too turny, but with the Fantail’s larger wheelbase, a small RKP truck feels right at home. This turns the board into a cruiser that can really be treated like a freeride board. It lowers the kick angle a touch, making smaller ollies even easier (although for a big ollie, it’s usually best to have the steeper kick angle of the street trucks), and adds a ton of control and stability to the setup. Now, it’s quite a bit more than a cruiser. Other benefits of RKP trucks on the Fantail are that you can more easily fit larger wheels.
